Having a trained mentor is a requirement by the Natioanl Guard Bureau for every cadet in the program.  If a cadet or their family asked you to be a mentor, OR if you are looking for a fufilling volunteer opportunity where you can truly make a difference please read the qualifications below.  Remember if there are any areas that you are not sure about, feel free to call and talk to our friendly Mentor Department Staff.  They are happy to help.

 

Qualifications for being a mentor are:

  • 23 years of age or older and same gender as the cadet

    • volunteers of all genders are needed

  • You must be drug free.

  • Have the ability to communicate, and be willing to spend some quality time with your Cadet in finding out how he or she is doing and if they need assistance. 

  • You must be cleared by a police records check (No criminal convictions within the last 5 years). 

  • You cannot be an immediate family member (mother, father, step-mother, step-father, brother, sister, step-brother, step-sister, foster parents or legal guardian.) of the cadet that you inend to mentor.

    • Also YCA staff members, their spouces, or significant others cannot be mentors. 

  • You cannot be living in the same household of the cadet that you inend to mentor

  • We require two favorable character references. 

  • You are required to attend a Mentor Training Workshop.
